You can let your deck or patio fall into such complete disrepair that it becomes a death trap for any would-be intruder. Or you can take more a socially acceptable action by using one of our tips below. Using alarm sensors tied to a home security system is an easy way to protect your sliding door. Most alarm systems come with door/window sensors (also commonly called entry sensors). When attached to a door frame, these sensors monitor open/close motions. If someone forces the door, the alarm sounds and calls for help.
Roller: When opening and closing the door, the rollers help your barn door slide along its track. One end of the roller is mounted onto the door, while the circular end is placed in the track. Don’t worry – the rollers will stop once they reach the end of the track. Rollers come in many shapes and styles, and some even hide behind the door. So, how do you measure for a barn door? Start by measuring from the floor to the top of the door frame. Most standard interior doorways will be 80” tall. If you have a casing around the frame, measure to the outside edge of the casing, not the top of the doorway opening. Whatever your final measurement is, add one inch to get your ideal barn door height. To find out how wide should your barn door be, measure from one side of the doorway to the other. Again, measure to the outside edges of the door casing. Most standard interior doorways are 36” wide. Add two inches to your width measurement, and now you have your ideal barn door height and width. Grilles for divided lites are inserted between glass panes, making window care a breeze. You can still buy this type of door for a premium, but most manufacturers sell more doors with faux divided lites. These have snap-in wood grilles or grills placed between the panels of dual glazing (see photo at left). They imitate the look but are less expensive to make and are easier to clean than true divided lites. Some grille configurations create an evenly-spaced gridwork of lites in pairs: 6, 8, 10 or 12 lites. Others stack horizontally-shaped panes, yielding 4, 5, or 6 horizontal lites. Still others divide the glass into interesting patterns or designs that imitate certain architectural styles, such as Craftsman (see photo below).
