Despite a few drawbacks, I’d argue this is the best laptop overall for the money — and one of the the best MacBooks for college students if you can afford it. It’s larger than the prior model in every dimension, but it is just about the same thickness. The 16-inch model measures in at 14.01 inches long, 9.77 inches wide, and 0.66 inches thick, so it is a tad shorter, but also a tad wider and a little but thicker (the prior model was 0.64 inches thick). It weighs in at 4.7 pounds, which is 0.4 pounds heavier than the 2019 16-inch MacBook Pro that it replaces.
Basically, size matters. The 16-inch is a hefty laptop, whereas the 14-inch model is noticeably smaller, which makes it easier to carry around. Also, it just feels more impressive to have that kind of power in a smaller laptop. The 14-inch MacBook Pro still comes with a large range of ports, reversing an annoying trend that Apple, and some other laptop makers, had of only putting a few USB-C ports in a device and calling it a day. The 13-inch M2 MacBook Pro drew some inspiration from older MacBook models in terms of design. Meanwhile, CPU and GPU benchmarks also test the 14-inch as being at least twice as powerful, despite Apple having raised the overall clock speed of the M2 MacBook Pro. This is due to the M2 model having two NAND slots in its internal setup and only one being filled with a ship for use. The 14-inch has four slots and two chips in use, giving the laptop more overall power. Even when the M2 is boosted to a 512GB SSD variant, it still runs slightly slower than the base model 14-inch MacBook Pro, according to MaxTech. Additionally, there has not been much follow-up on the overheating and throttling issues that appeared to plague the M2 MacBook Pro during its launch period. The new MacBook Pro models are equipped with Liquid Retina XDR displays with mini-LED backlighting for up to 3x higher brightness when viewing HDR content, while the addition of ProMotion allows for an adaptive refresh rate between a power-preserving 24Hz and a smooth-looking 120Hz depending on the type of content that is showing on the screen. The new Pro displays have also been upgraded with the iPad Pro’s ProMotion feature, which is so good that it’s now upsetting to use a laptop without it. ProMotion, which is turned on by default, makes it so the Pro can adjust its refresh rate between 10Hz and 120Hz, depending on what you’re doing. You can turn off ProMotion and use the Pro at a fixed refresh rate (47.95Hz, 48Hz, 50Hz, 59.94Hz, or 60Hz) if you want to, but I tried using it at 60Hz and found the difference too glaring after almost a week at 120Hz. The M1 Air has one headphone jack and two USB-C ports, but one of those ports is occupied any time the laptop is plugged into an outlet. Not so with the M2 Air, which has one headphone jack, two USB-C ports, and one MagSafe port specifically for charging the device. That means you’re less likely to need a dongle once you start reaching for an external mouse, an SD card adapter (unlike with the MacBook Pro, there’s no built-in SD card slot here), or some other accessory. I purchased an M1 MacBook Air the day it was released in November 2020, so I’m pretty familiar with the model’s strengths and limitations. And the M2 Air behaves so similarly it can be hard to tell them apart.
The 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pro models feature a Liquid Retina XDR display, which is a mini-LED display with up to 1000 nits sustained brightness, 1600 nits peak brightness, and a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio. You can keep in mind when considering your purchase that the M2 MacBook Pro includes a Touch Bar, and is the last MacBook set to have this feature. Meanwhile, if the hardware function keys are more up your alley, you can opt for the 14-inch MacBook Pro. Both laptops also include a Touch ID key on their keyboards in the upper right corner. One stand-out difference between the two MacBook Pro models is that the 14.2-inch MacBook Pro features a Liquid Retina XDR display with an extreme difference in brightness. The 3024 x 1964 resolution Mini LED display has 254 pixels per inch, an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120Hz, and a 16 million color range, in addition to a peak brightness of 1600 nits and sustained brightness of 1000 nits.
