Fashion and beauty tricks for 2021? The BBC’s weekly The Boss series profiles different business leaders from around the world. This week we speak to Rwandan fashion designer Joselyne Umutoniwase. In 2010, Joselyne Umutoniwase took a bold decision. She had been working as a film editor for five years but decided to follow her dream of becoming a fashion designer. She made her first fashion collection and when she travelled from her home in Rwanda to Germany for a film scholarship, she took two suitcases stuffed with tops, skirts and dresses.

Online footwear giant Zappos is launching an adaptive range aimed at the differently abled. Called the Single and Different Size Shoes test programme, Zappos will offer customers the opportunity to purchase a single shoe or shoes of different sizes from brands including Nike, New Balance and Converse amongst others. “The Single and Different Size Shoes Test Program is very close to our hearts – we wanted our community to know that we heard them, and continue to listen and innovate based on their needs and wants,” said Dana Zumbo, Business Development Manager, Zappos Adaptive. “Customer service is our number one goal, and we’re endlessly committed to ensuring that everyone feels comfortable and confident in their own shoe or shoes.”

What do Hunkemöller, H&M, River Island, Primark, Hema and Ralph Lauren all have in common? All these brands have made clothing for dogs. More and more brands are venturing into the market of our loyal four-legged friends, a market that is constantly growing. We recently saw that Boobie Billie, the fashionable Instagram dog, has started a luxury fashion line. Or Dsquared2, which recently launched an entire line of dog clothing and accessories together with Poldo Dog Couture. In fact, the pet clothing business is so profitable that there are labels making clothing exclusively for dogs and cats. Famous cats such as Karl Lagerfeld’s Choupette, and Jason Wu’s Jinxy and Peaches, prove how animals can play a big role in a person’s life. But is it just a phase? Is it bad for the animals? Many times I have been asked where my organic and eco friendly clothing is made. When my answer includes places like China, Bangladesh and, India, the response I often get is negative and I can certainly understand. Most people involved in the environmental movement prefer to “buy local” either to reduce the impacts resulting from transport or avoid supporting countries with less then ideal human rights records. However, it is my opinion that this view, although based on a desire to create positive change, is not the path we should choose and following are my reasons.
