Stretching from central coastal New South Wales up into southeast Queensland, the Eastern Australian Temperate Forests eco-region incorporates a wide variety of natural environments, microclimates and rich vegetation. However, clearing for land and urban development since the arrival of Europeans has encroached on much of the landscape and continues today. Additionally, invasive weeds attack the native vegetation. One of the most well known areas of the rainforest is the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Blue Mountains National Park. The region features a dramatic plateau of sandstone cliffs, deep gorges, eucalyptus forests and a profusion of rare and threatened plant and animal species.
Tongass in Alaska is the largest national forest in the United States at 17 million acres in total. It’s a land of ancient forests, towering mountains, and crisp glaciers, and it’s like nothing you’ve ever seen before! Valdivian Temperate Rainforest: This forest spreads over an area of about 248,100 km2, found in west coast of southern South America in Chile and Argentina. Angiosperm trees, bamboos, ferns, conifer trees, narrow coastal strips, ice sheets, glaciers, and a central valley highlight the forest. The temperature is usually humid due to heavy rains. It’s normally very foggy. The rainforest is named after Valdivia, in Southern Chile and named after the city’s founder Pedro de Valdivia. The forest is famous for the endemic plants and 150 foot tall trees in addition to rare species of animals. Some of the old tree species are alerce and olivilo.
El Yunque on Puerto Rico’s east side is the only rainforest included in the US National Forest Service and it is known for its rare trees and birds. It is one of the smallest rainforests, but has a diverse habitat. As of January 2018 El Yunque is closed as it recovers from the massive damage sustained during Hurricane Maria, but you can continue to check their website and plan a trip as soon as it reopens. El Yunque is basically a huge drainage place – that is why there are some many boulders full of moss, bromeliads and often a Sierra Palm on top. There are no flat places on this rain forest – with over 180 inches of rain. The cloud forest – over 2,500 feet is 99% humidity all day long.
